Stirling County RFC launch a new partnership with the Stirling Pétanque club
We are delighted to announce that the Stirling Pétanque Club has become an official affiliated Member of Stirling County RFC.
Pétanque has been played in Stirling since the late 1970’s. After starting at Bridgehaugh the game moved to several different locations in the area until 2021 when the Stirling Pétanque Club, also known as the Stirling Wolves Pétanque Club, was established back at Bridgehaugh. The Club was among the first Scottish clubs to participate in the inaugural Piste Challenge Cup competition that same year, achieving semi-finalist status in the triples and winning the doubles portion.
The club now has nearly 60 members, which is growing every month and has competed at local, regional, and national levels. For those that don’t know about the club:
- Pétanque (boules) is a game that can be played by all age groups 6 to 60+.
- Coaching is available for beginners and there is the opportunity to progress and play nationally.
- The game can be played in Singles, Doubles and Triples format with a typical round lasting 5 minutes.
- A family can arrive and play three games in approximately 2 hrs.
- Stirling Pétanque Club meets every Sunday and Thursday for coaching and friendly practice games.
- Boules are available for beginners
Stirling County RFC has become more than just a rugby club and is working closely with several other affiliates to create a meaningful Community Sports HUB for the city. Stirling running clubs, cycling club, Gaelic Football club, Judo, Pilates, already run out of Bridgehaugh.
Keith Russell Director of Sports Strategy for Stirling County RFC says: “It’s great to formalise a link between the Pétanque club and the Rugby club. We have shared the same site for years and it is a very natural step to join up the membership so everyone can benefit from an increased sharing of resources. This is exactly the type of arrangement that we want to encourage and at SCRFC we recognise that, as one of the bigger clubs in Stirling, we can have a much bigger impact by working in partnership with other clubs to increase participation in sport and physical activity in the city.”
We are also proud to be able to announce that Bridgehaugh has been chosen as the venue for the Pétanque Home Nations Tournament next August, where teams from Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales and Jersey with take part in a four-day competition. This will bring hundreds of people to Stirling for the first time and continue Stirling County’s commitment to grow sport and promote Stirling as a City. If people are interested in joining, please contact the club, or to become a member just go to our Fanbase page and click “Pétanque Membership”.
In advance of this, the club requests that people avoid using the old training pitch for the next 4 weeks to allow the works to be completed for this exciting new initiative.
